I like things.
I like glitter and stegosaurus. I like vodka in my pasta sauce and cheese on my chips. I like symbolism when it's done right and warm duvets. I like heavy rain with hot chocolate and sunshine with Pimms. I like it when people smile on public transport and say 'hello' in the street. I like a firm handshake and the smile in your eyes. Here are some more things I like.

When I was a student at Cambridge I remember an anthropology professor holding up a picture of a bone with 28 incisions carved in it. “This is often considered to be man’s first attempt at a calendar” she explained. She paused as we dutifully wrote this down. ‘My question to you is this – what man needs to mark 28 days? I would suggest to you that this is woman’s first attempt at a calendar.’ It was a moment that changed my life. In that second I stopped to question almost everything I had been taught about the past. How often had I overlooked women’s contributions?

“I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it’s just too much. The current’s too strong. They’ve got to let go, drift apart. That’s how it is with us. It’s a shame, Kath, because we’ve loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can’t stay together forever.”

Being alone is generally represented as quite dark, fragile. But I find it to be the most uplifting feeling ever.
